-Abyssian: Zero-
Zeros are large bird-like creatures that congregate in massive flocks and roost underneath surfaces. They have two sets of wings: the foreleg set, which is predominately used during flight, and the back leg set, which aids soaring but is otherwise folded up. They have cranes' necks and crocodilian heads tipped by sharp hooks, with three brightly-colored eyes on either side and in the center. A raggedy crest frames the head. Their bodies are primarily scaled with tattered feathers along the spine, tail tip, rump, and wing hands and feet. They have a rust-to-blue iridescence with fluorescent red spots.
Zeros are so-named for the way they can fly. Their physical forms can only sustain flight until adulthood, where the feathers start decaying prematurely. However at this time the Zero masters its power over gravity, allowing it to repel itself off the ground with minimal effort. It also uses this ability to defend itself, speedily call reinforcements, and steal objects. This power is extremely localized and cannot be used far from the Zero. Zeros also have a sticky poison breath that irritates the skin, and is deadly when inside a wound. Zeros are a lot like blackbirds in that they like to take trinkets, and they have a special knack for it. They're able to sense treasure from miles away and will use their gravity power to not only propel themselves toward it, but steal it with ease and flee before anyone can stop them. They then drop it into the communal treasure hoard of their flock. They simply seem to enjoy having the treasure and defend it fiercely, even though it doesn't do them any good. If the communal treasure hoard is moved, the Zeros disperse to a new location. They can be befriended with excessive gifting, which thankfully includes less valuable objects such as bones, feathers, shells, common shiny stones, silk, tooled leather, belt buckles, figurines, and even glitter, confetti, and sequins. If anyone unwelcome goes near the flock's hoard the Zeros will swarm and attack. Zeros can be ridden but do not guarantee safe passage through the Abyss, unlike Night Mares. Legend claims that Zeros are still-greedy thieves that have lived precarious lives and died without a change in their hearts. |
