-Abyssian: Deadwood Mimic-
Deadwood Mimics are described by name alone: they look like the Deadwood trees of the Abyss, but aren't. Like Deadwoods, they are fire retardant, have extremely rough bark that peels all the time, and have the distinct, twisted branches clawing at the sky. Unlike Deadwoods, they are symmetrical and can move to "see" energy sources passing by. They can also be picked out of a swathe of Deadwoods by checking the roots and listening for the sound of creaking wood; Mimics creak as they move and dislike sitting in magma, unlike Deadwoods which thrive in it. Deadwood Mimics are otherwise indistinguishable from the Abyssian plant, and don't move unless they spot a soul, whether it's attached to a body or not. When the soul comes close enough they remove their roots from the rock and entangle the soul in them, absorbing its energy the way squid eat fish. A living creature would not survive this encounter.
The only way to destroy a Deadwood mimic is to uproot it and keep it away from any solid surface for an extended time. Like any weed, the Mimic can regrow as long as one of its roots remain in the ground. The legend for Deadwood Mimics differs from other Abyssians in that it claims the Mimics aren't Abyssians at all, but rather spies from a rival Hell Lord. There isn't much supporting this other than likeness in appearance and behavior, though it's worth noting that Deadwood Mimics are the only Abyssians that will attack the living indiscriminately and without provocation. |
